Future Music, August 1998 Issue, £4.25

A great news article, with just a couple of mistakes:

  • JarreCon is taking place in Birmingham, not Manchester. They must have got mistaken as the photo was from the Manchester concert..
  • JarreCon '98 is the first convention organised by Natural Image Productions - previous conventions were organised by the same organiser, and the majority of the same team however.
  • Bastille day concert, 1989 with 4 million people? Well, it was 1990 and between 2 and 2.5 million people were at La Defense..

NB: FM will be including a small correction in the news pages next month.

Where's Jarre?

Jarre fans meet in Manchester while the man appears in gay Paris...

THE GUILD HALL AT Aston Uni will be playing host to the fourth UK Jean Michel Jarre Convention. JarreCon '98 on Sunday 23 August. Natural Image Productions, organiser of the last three conventions, expects this year's event to be doubly special, as it also marks Jarre's 50th birthday.

UK tribute band Mystique will be headlining an afternoon of live music, video footage and JMJ DJing. Rare merchandise and donated items will be auctioned to raise funds for UNESCO (Jarre is a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations) and fan-run stalls will be selling CDs, fanzines and other Jarre bumph all day. There's to be a quiz to find 'Jarre fan of 1998' (the biggest smart-Jarse, perhaps? Er, maybe not), a prize draw, question-and-answer sessions ("Where's Jean then?") and the chance to muck about with a theremin, plus a practical workshop by Dutch band Mercurey on how JMJ puts his sequences together. Andy Hagerty, aka FM's very own Sash!-battler Kaleid, will be making an appearance as well.

Advance tickets are available now at £7.50 (reductions are available if you buy two or more) from Natural Image Productions.

Mind you, if you fancy seeing the man himself, in person, Jarre's company Dreyfus Music are trying to setup a concert in Paris on 14th July, otherwise known as Bastille Day. The concert, in which Jarre will perform alongside the two drummers from Apollo 440, Carl Cox, DJ Cam and a few others, will be held in the park in front of the Eiffel Tower, two days after the World Cup final is held in the city. This follows on from Jarre's collaboration with Apollo 440 on the track Rendez-vous 1998 which is currently being used by ITV for their World Cup theme music. Yeah we thought so too.

Jean Michel Jarre is something of a national institution with the French and this fact, coupled with the current high profile (did anyone see that dreadful Fantasy Football with the Brigette Nielsen fiasco?), should mean that well over a million people turn up for the extravaganza. In fact, if Jarre's concert in the Champs Elysees back in 1989 is anything to go by - over four million attended - it should be a fantastic night. It's a no-ticket thing, so just turn up and enjoy.

And, while we're giving Jarre a plug, why not grab a copy of a new album out, full of remixes of tracks on Jarre's latest LP, Oxygene 7-13.

Sunday Mercury, 12th July 1998, UK Midlands newspaper

A good small article, with a picture which looks like it was taken around the time of the Docklands. However they forgot to put the 'phone number and also contains a few small inaccuracies:

  • Jarr-Con?
  • UNESCO does do work involving children, but also has many other worthwhile programmes which it constantly works with throughout the world.

Hopefully the Sunday Mercury will print a telephone number next week!

Jarre's Birmingham rendez-vous

FANS of world cup musician Jean Michel Jarre are to flock to the Midlands for a celebration of his music.

Visitors are expected from Australia and the US as well as across Europe for the Jarr-Con event which has been endorsed by Jarre (above).

The multi-millionaire, aged 49, wrote ITV's World Cup tune, Rendezvous 98.

Jarr-Con will be held at Aston University in Birmingham next month and attractions will include a Jarre tribute band, exhibitions, and an auction of Jarre memorabilia with profits going to children's charity UNESCO.

The musician, who uses spectacular light shows in his performances, has sold over 50 million records.

  • Entrance to Jarre-Con on August 23; £7.50 or £14 for two.

Jarre Jam

Sunday, August 23 is the date for this year's JarreCon, the fourth UK Jean-Michel Jarre convention, taking place at the Guildhall in Birmingham's Aston University. Highlights of the day will include exhibitors selling merchandise, CDs, records, T-shirts, posters and photos, a video screen playing rare interviews, videos and concert footage, a quiz to find the 'Jarre Fan of 1998', and an auction of rare records and merchandise, with proceeds going to UNESCO (of which JMJ is a Goodwill Ambassador). Representatives of Jarre fanclubs from all over Europe will be at the convention, and a DJ will be taking requests throughout the day.

The most unusual happening of the day will probably be the theremin demonstration. A unit will be available for visitors to listen to and play, with a backing track of Oxygene 10 provided for fans to jam to; an approximate time of five minutes will be allocated to each person, for the fee of £1 - which will, again, be donated to UNESCO.

Advance tickets are available at £7.50 each, £14 for two, £20 for three, and £6 each for bookings of four or more. In addition, programmes and JarreCon T-shirts can now be pre-ordered along with tickets. And everyone who purchases an advance ticket will be entered into a draw for exclusive prizes.

Future Music, September 1998 Issue, £4.25 at newsagents now.

A small correction to the large August 1998 news feature. Just one mistake:

  • JarreCon is on Sunday 23rd August, not Saturday 23rd August as stated.

Jarre in Birmingham

Last month we ran a story about the Jean Michel Jarre conference taking place on Saturday 23 August. Just to clarify our ambiguity, the conference is being held at Aston University in Birmingham not Manchester. Tickets (costing £7.50 or less if you buy two or more) are still available, just call the number below.

A good news article with all relevant information, and no mistakes except for writing 'Natural Image' instead of 'Natural Image Productions'.
